The Meaning of Halloween
Halloween means different things to different people. Over time, the meaning of any event will change and boundaries will be blurred, and there is a good chance that the ‘real’ meanings of what first brought about such celebrations will have been distorted to a point that no one can really say exactly why we celebrate them.
With Halloween, the origins themselves are mixed with Samhain being its original impetus – a day when the dead could visit loved ones. In the 9th Century, the Christian church declared November 1st ‘All Saints Day’ and legend gave rise that before such a hallowed day, evil spirits would have one last day to venture out upon the earth. This would be October 31st, the day before the ‘hallowed’ day – or ‘Hallowe’en.’
Over time such festivities have merged and mutated, and from a time to pay tribute to ancestors, the day is now much more about buying Halloween costumes and allowing children to have a good dose of scary fun.
With so many supposed holidays being so commercialised, it is actually quite nice that this holiday has retained some of its spirit (both literally and figuratively) and remained a festival that continues to retain a certain amount of intrigue, whilst actually offering a genuine sense of fun.
Technically, by celebrating the dead, we are also celebrating life and, if anything, the modern idea of Halloween is a far more interesting one than older traditions may have been, and in many ways using Halloween costumes to give our children a sense of fun and delight celebrates life far more than the older, darker celebrations.
Ultimately, Halloween can mean whatever you want it to, and its current form is as interesting as any previous one. And which ever way you look at it, it is and always has been about keeping a certain ‘spirit‘ alive.

Tips in Choosing Halloween Costumes
Aside from Christmas, Easter Sunday and Thanksgiving, Halloween is also one of the most celebrated holidays around the world. Many people are preparing for this event since children will do some trick or treat while adults enjoy a good Halloween party. In some cases, malls are doing some gimmicks to attract children and one is having a trick or treat program. That is why, avid Halloween fans prepare for parties and Halloween costumes.
For many people, choosing a Halloween costume is an important part of the whole Halloween experience. Many prepare for this even a month before Halloween to avoid rush purchases. Preparing early will make them outstanding among the others. Others however are contented with what they see on the market or in their closet. Regardless of the preparations, is the person really wearing the right Halloween costume for him or her?
Tips in Choosing a Halloween Costume
– Before buying an outfit, comfort should be the number one priority. Either doing the trick or treat or simply attending parties, the person should be comfortable with the Halloween costume. It should also match with the weather. Wearing a very thin piece of clothing on a cold night will not only cause the person to be uncomfortable, eventually getting sick.
– The costume should also fit into the theme of the party. If the prevalent theme is futuristic or Lady Gaga inspired, wearing a cowboy costume won’t surely fit in. If the party is an all gown-up crowd or if there are children involved, wearing skimpy outfit is not a good choice. However, it is advised to choose a costume that responds or is associated with current events because it can be a good topic. The downside though is that some people might think the Halloween costume is poorly planned.
– Safety should be thought of. As much as possible the outfit should not include lights and sharp objects because it can hurt many people especially the kids and the one who wears the outfit as well. When intricate head accessories are used, the vision should not be impaired because it can cause accidents.
– A special tip for buying or choosing kid‘s costume is that it is very important to consider the preferences of the kids. Parents should not insist what they want. After all, it is the child who will wear the costume and not the parent. So if the child wants to wear Spiderman costume or wants to be Dora, let them be.
– Ultimately, budget should be given attention when buying Halloween costumes. These costumes can be made by hand especially if the theme or design is one-of-a-kind or if there is enough time. There are a number of costumes that are not expensive yet it looks elegant and it stands out at the crowd. Thrift shops are also available everywhere and they sell really cheap items. Using old clothes from the closet can still be worn and adding some accessories or putting a twist on it can be fun.
If you run out of ideas, there is nothing to worry. There are magazines, internet, and other media outfits that can help you achieve that outstanding Halloween Costumes.

Planning A Halloween Event in Your Front Garden
Adults as well as children celebrate Halloween in many unusual ways. Take for example, a lady in Detroit, who waits for the school bus to leave her house on the morning of Halloween. She then sets to work on her front garden. When the bus returns the children are amazed to see it transformed with gravestones, monsters and ghosts.
This new trend in front garden decoration, attracts trick or treat visitors to these houses especially if the house has built up a reputation over the years. And our lady finds that instead of having a handful of visitors on Halloweens eve, she gets over 300. The other effect is that other homeowners in the neighborhood also start to do the same. Pretty soon the whole street is transformed into a Halloween occasion.
Perhaps the fascination is that on this one night of the year, we become more aware of the supernatural and the power it carries. There is no other time where you could put up this type of creepy decoration and not have the police coming round to investigate.
Where do you start? Well if you are a planner, then you could imagine your garden as the setting for a series of short scenes from a play. You could start with what first attracts kids. Then, as they walk up the pathway, what do they see or hear? Could you arrange something moving in your window?
Now they ring your front door bell. Who answers it and how do they answer it? Do you see the possibilities? You could actually frighten them more than they could you.
One couple set up four live actors in the garden path to their front door. One was dressed in black, one as a mummy and so on. One controlled a buzzer sound so that when people got near, they were buzzed. She got many screams with that one. So think outside the box this Halloween and set up an event you can really enjoy, in a creepy sort of way.
