Halloween candy: Can you avoid too much sugar?
Halloween is a time of fun for children and it is difficult to avoid or even to limit the intake of sugar during this time of year. However most sweets contain too much sugar; there are preventions you can take during this spooky time of year. Creative ideas can help to find healthier alternatives.
Before you start with searching for alternatives you can best try to convince your children why they need to limit these delicious sweets. Halloween is once a year and even an excess of sugar during this time of year can damage their health and may cause diseases with long-term effects for their further life. For example, too much sugar can result in getting the disease of diabetes. If your children are aware of these risks they will be careful during this time of year and with your help they can find healthier solutions.
There is no need to avoid sugar completely in your Halloween food but here are some tips which may help your children to prevent going overboard with these delicious sweets:
*Drink plenty of water
Maybe one overlooked issue is the importance of drinking water. It is often said drinking water is necessary to avoid dehydration and cleaning your body but drinking plenty of water may help your children to avoid eating food which contains too much sugar. Drinking water will reduce the hungry feeling and can help them to overeat with junk food or sweets.
*A well balanced diet in their main meals
Halloween festivities take place in the evening or in the afternoon. It is important to prepare food with all the necessary nutrients and vitamins for a well balanced diet of their breakfast, lunch and dinner. Maybe it is best to make a selection of their favorite food which contains all the necessary ingredients to avoid they will rush to sweets between the meals in this time of year. If they don’t feel hungry and enjoy their favorite food they will likely avoid or limit eating sweets with too much sugar.
*Healthier alternatives
However, it is not necessary to avoid sugar completely; there are some excellent ideas to limit the consumption of sugar during the Halloween period. Chocolate contains always sugar but prefer dark chocolate instead of milk or other light chocolate. Dark chocolate contains flavonoids which reduces the chance of heart diseases.
Fruit is always a good idea to replace some snacks. Pumpkin is associated with Halloween and maybe you can prepare roasted pumpkin seeds. Some other suggestions are creepy apples, hot apple cider, orange Jack O’Lanterns with vanilla yoghurt, Halloween creatures (for example ghosts, witches and devils) made of different kinds of fruit like apples, oranges, peers, kiwis and some others.
*Exercise
It is recommended you motivate your children to exercise before going to a Halloween party. Maybe they have already this habit; in this case it is best they exercise a quarter longer than usual. Exercise will burn calories and help your children to reduce the negative consequences of sugar during the Halloween party. It is almost impossible to avoid sugar completely during your party and if you exercise before you will limit the damage of sugar in your blood.
*Shopping
Many weeks before Halloween you can already buy Halloween candies. Don’t take your children with you and avoid buying these candies weeks before this popular holiday. It is best you have these candies in your house only a few days before Halloween; you may prevent the temptation of eating these candies too soon.
Creativity is the key to have success in a healthy Halloween. Probably you can’t avoid your children will eat sweets with too many sugar; you can help them with preparing a healthy meal at home and you may prevent overindulging sugar. Teach your children to say “no” if friends or other people offer too many sweets and you can be convinced they will enjoy this Halloween holiday with healthier solutions.
