Having reluctantly been a large sized person for some time, I have become grateful that there are so many more larger and more wonderful selections available at every price level. There was a time where sewing your own was an only option. One of these times was for a Halloween costume. Now, the choices are some much wider. I would suggest, however, that if you know what couture you want, try to buy it as early as possible. Plus sizes are still made in more limited amounts, and the earlier you can purchase, the more choice you will have.
Several national stores that I am aware of have a fairly wide and updated selection of costumes. A store to definitely visit, even if you are not buying is Spirit Costume stores. Spirit Costume stores are usually open just during the Halloween season, but they have a year round on-line shop as well at www.spiritcostume.com. You can check out the on-line and the store outlets to see what is available. Pirate costumes, flower children outfits, vampire outfits, angels, devils, magicians and wizards, witches and warlocks are all popular this year and available. Spirit Costumes also has a section for sexy costumes that some other stores lack. I also like to look for a costume that will hold up for more than one season. If you like a certain time period or theme, say, pirates, you can mix and match for future years by adding parts of costumes or accessories. Spirit Costumes has a great accessory are as well, to spice of your costume choice and your home as well.
Another national store I have had good success with is Party Planet. Party Planet is a year round store that features Halloween Costumes in the fall. It sells items to plan a theme parties all year long and has a wide selection of adult plus size costumes. It also has an on-line store at www.partyplanet.com so you can check before you shop. The costumes at Party Planet are trendy for all of them go along with the current party themes. You may have trouble finding a Tudor era costume here, but you will have no problem finding vampire, fifties or eighties costumes. I have also found it a great help to have party theme decorations and tableware all in one place. This store will give you great ideas for parties and Halloween in general.
Some of the national stores such as WalMart, Target, ToysRUs and K-Mart also have a selection of adult plus size costumes. Most of these, however, need to be ordered on-line and are limited. You can also check out the stores for these costumes. If you can find something you like, WalMart definitely leads the costume price wars. Another option is Disney stores, although most of their costumes are for kids. Remember, though, Disney has “mommy” and “daddy” clothes all year round that look like great costumes to me. Of course, E-bay and Amazon and other big on-line stores will also have a limited selection of costume. Unfortunately, large size stores don’t usually feature costumes.
There are also multiple on-line buying options all over the internet. I would recommend dealing only with those companies that you know. And don’t forget about looking into sewing an original costume for yourself. I don’t sew well, but my kids loved having costumes that no one else had a school. Even if someone had made the same costume, it was always a little different. You might still have time to hire someone to help you out if you act soon. Going to a fabric store to shop for Halloween can be loads of fun. Now get out there and find your hidden persona!
