We all know how excited children become as Halloween draws closer. But instead of Halloween being a distraction to kids, why not harness this Halloween energy into some Halloween math practice.
Halloween gives parents and teachers a wonderful tool to motivate kids to do math. These Halloween math activities can be used at school with a whole class or a small group or at home with siblings playing against each other or a child playing with an adult.
Listed below are few different ways to get kids counting, calculating and practicing math skills.
Spooky
Buzz is a favorite counting game for many children. But you are bound to find that they’ll like the Halloween version even more.
Players sit in a circle and start to count around the circle. But when a player comes to the number 7, a multiple of 7, e.g. 14 or 35 or any number with a 7 digit, e.g. 27, the player says buzz instead of the number. When a player doesn’t say ‘Buzz’ at the appropriate time, the player is out.
In the Halloween version the word buzz can be replaced with a Halloween word, e.g. ‘spooky’ or ‘scary’ or ‘ghost’. Try to count to 70 which would be a ‘spooky’ number and then continue on counting – spooky-one, spooky-two, etc as players can’t say ‘seventy-one’.
4 Dice Skeleton
This game requires 4 dice and a copy of the alphabet with a number value beside each letter, i.e. a-1, b-2, c-3, d-4 etc. Each player also has a piece of paper with 8 dashes on it, ready to write the word SKELETON.
The object of the game is to write the word SKELETON, by rolling the total value for each letter.
If a player rolls 5, 3, 3 and 1, these are added to 12 which is a letter ‘L’. The player can then put the letter ‘L’ into their word. If a player rolls 1, 1, 1 and 2, they can write in the letter ‘E’ both times in the word. The first player to finish their word SKELETON is the winner. The game can also be played with other Halloween words, but don’t include any words that contain an A, B, C, Y or Z as with 4 dice it is impossible to throw 1, 2, 3, 25 or 26. Try using the words – FRIGHTEN, MONSTER or PUMPKIN. Words like HALLOWEEN, FRANKENSTEIN or JACK-O’-LANTERN can also be used if the A’s and C’s are written in before starting the game.
A shorter version of this game is to have each person working on completing one word.
The person who completes it with the last letter is the winner.
Halloween Brain Teasers
Halloween Brain Teasers are also a great way to get kids busy with math. Simply take your favorite Brain Teasers and change the characters and situations to a Halloween character or situation.
Here’s a couple to get you started.
Dracula only likes red candy and Frankenstein only likes black candy. There are 6 pieces of red candy, 9 pieces of black candy and 4 pieces of blue candy in a bag. What is the minimum number of pieces of candy that Dracula will need to pick, without looking at them to make sure that he gets at least 1 piece of red candy? How many pieces will Frankenstein need to pick out to make sure he gets at least 1 black piece?
Dracula has 3 pairs of pants – black, brown and blue, 2 shirts – black and white and 3 capes – black, red and blue. Name all of the different outfits that he can wear, e.g. black pants, white shirt and red cape. How many different outfits can he make?
There are many different ways to use Halloween to make math more exciting. You’ll find that children will definitely agree that Halloween math is much more interesting than doing regular math. So instead of trying to dampen the enthusiasm for Halloween why not use it to make math fun?

Halloween is a time when ghosts, witches and goblins seem to pop up everywhere. Sometimes the festivities can be a little too intense for younger children. Here are some non-spooky Halloween activities that are lots of fun for toddlers to do.
Create Fun with Colored Pasta
- You can add 1 cup of uncooked pasta noodles to a plastic bag.
- The zip top plastic bags are perfect for coloring macaroni noodles.
- In a plastic cup mix 2 tablespoons of isopropyl rubbing alcohol and 4-6 drops of food coloring together.
- Add this liquid to the noodles, zip the bag and shake gently until the color is absorbed by all of the pasta noodles. This will take 2-3 minutes.
- Set a colander in the sink and pour the colored noodles into it very carefully. The excess color will be drained from the noodles.
- Then you can use a slotted spoon to lift the noodles and place them on a cookie sheet that you have lined with some paper towels.
- Let the noodles dry overnight before using them.
The best colors for Halloween crafts will be noodles that are colored orange, green, yellow and black.
Let your toddlers glue the pasta onto paper plates to create jack o’lantern faces. You can also help them string bracelets that they can wear.
Edible Treats are Fun to Make and Fun to Eat
Use some canned frosting, marshmallows, graham crackers and Halloween candies to create fun treats that can be eaten.
Bean Bag Throw
You will need an old white sheet or tablecloth for this game and some pumpkins that you cut from orange poster board.
Use wide tipped markers to draw some pumpkin targets in several places. You might want to draw some vines and leaves on the sheet with green markers, or just make some circles that resemble bull’s eyes. Now spread the cloth on the floor or place it on your lawn. Give the kids 2-3 poster board pumpkins to toss at the sheet. Whoever gets their pumpkins the closest to the targets will win the game.
* If you are using the vines and leaves drawings then the winner is the person that comes closest to landing their pumpkin back on the vine.
Additional Ideas
You can make a simple fishing pole from a small branch and a piece of yarn. Set up a table or a box in the corner of the room and cover it with a Halloween inspired cloth. Have someone sitting behind the table who stays out of view during the game. They should have a supply of small candies and toys with them. Then let each child take turn fishing. Each time the fishing line is cast over the table a small surprise can be tied or taped to the tip.
Put some dry ice in few hollowed out pumpkins and set them around the room. Make sure that toddlers can not reach the pumpkins. The dry ice will produce a smoky haze that will surprise and delight small children.

Although present day Halloween activities revolve around trick-or-treating and costume parties, historically masks were worn to placate the evil spirits. You may not be frightened by pumpkins carved into eerie faces nor believe in witches and goblins. But when is the last time you thought seriously about the “ghosts” that have been haunting you far too long?
The negative feelings that you may be experiencing – from time to time or perhaps more regularly – could be due to normal unhappiness, stress from overload, situational sadness, or even clinical depression. When there is no obvious trigger for emotional symptoms, they are often minimized, ignored or dismissed. But did you know that one in four people suffer from depression at some time in their life? Close to 50% don’t receive treatment yet, in the past few years, there has been a marked increase in the use of antidepressants – 120 million prescriptions were filled in 2005.
If you have had feelings of extreme sadness, helplessness or hopelessness for more than two weeks, you should consider scheduling an appointment with you family practitioner or internist. After discussing your symptoms, you will most likely be referred to a specialist. Psychiatrists are medical experts who are trained to evaluate clinical depression. This can take some time, especially if anti-depressants are indicated. There may be a process of trial and error while you are being regulated on the appropriate medication and proper dosage with the least side effects.
In the meantime, there are several non-medical actions you can take as you begin to better understand and cope with your moods. After reading the following suggestions about self care and social support, implement the ones that best fit your personal situation:
1. Honor your body by focusing on what makes you feel physically and emotionally better – pay attention to your exercise routine, what you eat, your sleeping habits and what gives you pleasure. Reduce the situations that cause stress and increase the ones that make you feel more relaxed or alive.
2. Create a balance between caring for the well being of others and nurturing your personal needs. Make time each day to nourish yourself – you may even need to make a schedule until this becomes a routine that is factored into your daily life.
3. Knowledge is power. Gather information about ways to deal with how you are feeling – explore Internet search engines or the self-help section of bookstores. Talk with friends and family whose opinions you respect.
4. Gratitude is a powerful emotion. Use it to your advantage. Tell those who are important to you what you think of them. Watch their reaction and see how that makes you feel. Practice what you have learned in the past about being resilient. Release tension through humor and watch yourself begin to bounce back
5. Support is a valuable tool. Find a class or workshop through your local university extension program or mental health center. Join an ongoing group or attend a weekend retreat to share concerns, problem-solve and gain new perspective. A therapist or a coach can be a sounding board, validate your perceptions, support your ideas and help you follow through with your plans.
It can be difficult to maintain a sense of optimism when emotional circumstances are complicated and painful. Focus your thoughts on what you can accomplish rather than on what you cannot. Recognize the insight and skills that are already an integral part of you. And notice how your character strengths support what you do and who you are.
Beginning to talk about depression can increase awareness, reduce the stigma and mitigate symptoms. Think about exorcising your “demons,” once and for all. Don’t disguise yourself in costume, no matter what time of the year. This Halloween, take off your mask and commit to feeling more positive about yourself.

Halloween: It’s the most wonderful time of the year for the Addamses. Mama makes a special Halloween feast, Gomez carves the pumpkin, Fester bobs for grenades, and Wednesday and Pugsley dress up as two of history’s most frightening and hideous creatures: Siskel and Ebert, and go out trick or treating. To top this off, the Addamses are treated to being robbed, which they most thoroughly hoped to enjoy.
