Just because you’ve decided to forego participation in the Halloween festivities doesn’t mean you can’t make fun on your own. Furthermore, there are ways to use the Halloween season as a way to spread Christ’s love and the redeeming power of the gospel message. Here are just five ways to have some fun without risking the safety of your Christian children.
1. Have a Game Night
So your kids are longingly looking at the kids outside with tear-filled eyes. What is a homeschool parent to do? Why not create your own fun? Have a family game night complete with a variety of board games and fun activities. Go wild with candy prizes and autumn-themed goodies. If your homeschoolers want, you can even dress up. You can still pass out candy to the neighbor children if you stay home. I know parents who pass out candy accompanied with small tracts or Bible verses. This is a great way to expose kids to God’s word. Whatever you do, don’t shut yourself in and ignore knocks on the door. That only sends the message that you are strange and even unfriendly.
2. Go to a Harvest Party
Each year, my church throws a Harvest Party on October 31st. There is a leaf pile surrounded by bales of hay that kids can dive into for a period of time to search for candy. There are competitions of all kinds, including target shooting, jousting, pillow fights, wrestling, and more. Each room of the church is devoted to a specific Bible-themed game. The cafeteria cooks pizza, popcorn, and nachos that come free with admission. My homeschoolers usually come home from the harvest party marveling as to how the harvest party has to be so much more fun than trick-or-treating. If your church doesn’t have one, why not look into starting one of your own? You could even host one with your homeschool co-op.
3. Go Bowling
On Halloween night, bowling alleys are usually pretty empty. You can take your family and to a bowling alley and have an all-night bowling party. Don’t just limit your fun to bowling. Laser tag, goofy golf, and other fun activities can be easily substituted. You could even get together with other homeschooling families for some friendly competition. You can make it especially fun by turning your family into a team. Each Christian homeschooling family can have its own colors or even uniforms. Be creative!
4. Throw a Costume Party
So your kids really want to dress up. Well, what’s wrong with that? As long as they don’t dress up as anything evil, a costume party can be a great activity for a church or homeschool co-op. Award prizes for the best costumes. One Christian homeschool friend of mine threw a Noah’s Ark party. Each homeschooler dressed up as a different animal and they put on a short play about Noah’s Ark.
5. Pumpkin Party
Carving Pumpkins was always my favorite element of Halloween. I can’t think of a good reason to not carve a pumpkin. Why not have a pumpkin party with your homeschoolers and other Christian friends? You can go to a pumpkin patch, pick out your favorite pumpkins, and then carve them into silly faces. I heard of one ambitious family carving Bible verses and inspirational messages like “Jesus is Lord” into a series of pumpkins. Just don’t throw away those seeds. Dry them out and add some salt for a fun snack!

Halloween is within three weeks and I was wondering what kind of activities are organized in the district I live. While reading the local newspaper, I realized that nothing was envisaged.
I thus made a search on the Internet in order to know what was organized in the other Belgian districts and was not disappointed by what I learned.
Many Halloween events are organized in Wallonia and in Brussels. While bars, restaurants, dancing clubs organize their own Halloween evening, some districts also have their own events.
Here are some examples:
A school in Trooz organize the “Trooz Halloween Festival”; which is a two kilometers walk, marked out, decorated and supervised, with spitting of fire, witch, fairies, phantoms, werewolves, waders, magician, and fireworks at the end of the evening.
In the district of Fontaine-L’Evêque, the Cox Team Belgium organizes its Halloween supper with a special Halloween menu.
Appetizer: witch juice.
Main dish: The pig of Malvira in porchetta (Malvira is a Belgian TV witch).
Dessert and Coffee.
The district of Haversin organizes since 1994 the Halloween Festival: in the dark of an October evening, they will see a cart drawn by horses and followed by a strange procession composed by ghosts, witches, monsters… The traditional pumpkin soup is offered at the end of the evening.
The “Village de Cahottes” (Flémalle), will be invaded by a witches, skeletons and vampires. Candies will be given to the children and the Halloween Festival will end by the capture of the malefic witch who will be publicly burned; which will save the village from the ghosts until next Halloween. Fireworks will enclose the evening.
In Mariembourg, we will have the opportunity to travel in the Horror Train.
Thy le Château organizes a Halloween Night Market.
For the second consecutive year, the Caves of Wonck (Bassenge) organize their Halloween-Crypt Show. This Halloween Crypt Show is a walk in the world of strange and fantastic.
In Brussels, Halloween fans will visit Museum of Art and Fantastic, where they will meet witches, monsters and other horrible characters. The visitors will have the opportunity to receive a wizard diploma after having passed some horrible tests. A family enigma seems to be the focus point of this event. The artist has also created a Horror Carousel and their visitors will meet Halloween Man.
Ittre organizes a very original Halloween event because it will take place during the evening in Tricot Wood where the visitors will meet lots of witches, vampires, ghosts, zombies and other horrible Halloween creatures.
In the district of Forchies-La-Marche, the local youth association “Case Depart” organizes the Halloween Dancing Night and ask their visitors to come with their most scary Halloween costume.

Remember when you were a child, and for Halloween you would dress up in costumes like a cheerleader, a witch, or a cat? Well, as you got older, you were still able to dress up as those characters, just with less fabric and more push-up bras.
Celebrating Halloween in the 21st century for a woman means that it is the one night of the year you can walk through the streets in skimpy lingerie and as long as you have animal ears or a nurse’s hat on, you can say it’s just a Halloween costume.
For women, Halloween costume options are seemingly endless. Halloween costume sites feature well over 700 different costume choices, all of which scarcely cover a person’s body. Police costumes, nurse, bumblebee, sailor, school girl, and many more are options available on nearly every Halloween costume website in every size.
Why is it that on one day of the year, women find it more socially acceptable to bare their skin in a way they would regularly label badly?
In reality, many women aren’t comfortable enough with their bodies to sport risqué clothing on a regular basis. Because of the ease in which society labels women “sluts” or “skanks”, now more than ever, females are tip-toeing around what they do, say, and where in order to avoid the harsh stereotype.
However, on Halloween night it’s become customary, almost expected, that women run around bars and parties, scantily clad in costumes that vaguely resemble animals or figures of authority. In the movie “Mean Girls”, Lindsay Lohan’s character Cady is unaware of the “sexy Halloween costume” rule, and shows up to a party dressed in a full Zombie Bride costume, complete with ugly fake teeth and a dress that covered most of her body. She was predictably out of place.
It’s most likely that the trend of sexy Halloween costumes evolved from teenagers and young adults still wanting to celebrate Halloween, but in a more adult way. With the prominence of events such as lingerie themed parties and wet t-shirt contests, it seemed only fitting that Halloween be turned into a holiday to celebrate the near-naked female body.
It can feel empowering for a woman to wear a skimpy French Maid costume and be able to parade around confidently in it. On Halloween, women aren’t judged on the clothes (or lack of) that they wear, and are instead applauded for accentuating their body confidently.
Halloween also allows some women to indulge in their fantasies of role-play or dressing sexy without fear of seeming strange or awkward.
Places like Yandy Costumes offer hundreds of different Halloween costume options for women, most of which seem less sexist than they do sexy. In general, sexy Halloween costumes have become more liberating for women rather than sexist or chauvinistic. It’s possible that the trend of baring skin on holidays will help invigorate women to become more comfortable in their own bodies daily.
