Celebrate Halloween In San Diego In October

Halloween is just round the corner. Children especially look forward to this annual holiday when you get to do interesting activities such as trick-or-treating, carving jack-o’-lanterns, and apple bobbing. For adults too, it is lot of fun to dress up in interesting, scary costumes and attending costume parties, watching horror movies, visiting haunted attractions, and playing pranks.

San Diego celebrates Halloween with enthusiasm and fervor. Here are some of Halloween events which you must attend if you are on a vacation to San Diego in October:

Escondido Halloween Carnival
Escondido Halloween Carnival promises a whole lot of fun for all ages. You can enjoy carnival games, check out face painting and art projects, visit the haunted house, listen to music, and participate in the costume contest.

In short, this event lets you take break from routine life and have fun. The Escondido Halloween Carnival will take place on 29th October, 2011 at the Grape Day Park, near downtown.

Haunted San Diego Ghost Tour
You must have checked out beaches, Balboa Park and the shopping centers in city. Now do something different and go on a guided ghost tour of the place. Haunted San Diego Ghost Tour is an entertaining journey where the expert guide will take you on a tour of San Diego and you can learn about the haunted history of mansions, hotels and graveyards.

You can learn about the stories of the people who lived in those places, died there and still believed to haunt the very same place. And if you think it is going to be very scary then you are wrong. In fact, it will be an interesting and entertaining journey to learn something new about the city. Children of 10 years and older can also come along as long as an adult is accompanying them.  Haunted San Diego Ghost Tour takes place Wednesday through Saturday for two hours. This event is full of  suspenseful stories, and spooky fun. So make sure you do not miss it.

Bates Nut Farm
One of the family-oriented Halloween events is the Bates Nut Farm in Valley Center. Bring your family here and have a picnic, enjoy the hay rides, walk through the straw maze, check out pumpkin patch, farm zoo, or pick your own Jack-O-Lantern. Bates Nut Farm Pumpkin Patch will remain open till 31st October daily from 9am to 5pm, so do spare a few hours to spend with your family here.

Vacations are supposed to be rejuvenating and relaxing. But if you spend most of your time in traveling from any destination to another, then it becomes hectic. Therefore choose a hotel in San Diego from where not just all these Halloween venues but also Balboa Park, beaches and other major attractions are nearby.

This will ensure that you spend your time in exploring places and checking out events rather than wasting long hours in commuting and getting parking. There are lots of good San Diego hotels which offer commendable services at affordable prices. And once you are done reserving room in a good San Diego lodging, make your itinerary which must include a visit to any of the Halloween event. It will be fun!

Things to do in the October Half Term Holidays with the Children

Where to go with the Children in the October Half Term Holidays?

“What are we doing today?”

Now that the weather is changing in the UK  and we suddenly find ourselves in Autumn, we sometimes need to put a bit more thought into how to how to keep ourselves and our children entertained. Whether you stay in the UK or look to escape to the fairer climate abroad, we’ve come up with a few suggestions for you.

Home

Halloween! One of the highlights for my children during this season is Halloween and all the preparation and festivity that goes in to it. Rather than just picking up a pumpkin from the supermarket, why not take a trip to a local farm to choose yours. It feels a lot more special when the children actually see where the pumpkins come from and pick out their own. A lot of farms decorate barns and some have festivities for the children such as carving etc. If you are looking for a bit of inspiration when designing the scary face it can be helpful to google pumpkin face designs which you can print off and even use as a template.

Rather than throwing away the inside of the pumpkins, many people are now using them for recipes such as pumpkin pie and soup which leads another activity for Halloween; cooking!

It’s not always easy to encourage children to cook, especially boys, but Halloween makes it a lot more fun. Things that children in particular might enjoy are: baking cakes/fairy cakes and decorating them with fancy Halloween faces or they could try their hands at making jelly/orange pumpkins.  Take 4 oranges, cut the top off and scoop out the orange.  Then cut faces in the orange as you would with a pumpkin.  Make the jelly and leave to set in a bowl.  When the jelly is set, you can add it to the oranges.

Collecting Conkers:  Like blackberry picking you need to plan your route to make sure you come across a few conker trees but why not take a long walk and see how many conkers you can find? You can have a contest to see who can find the most, the biggest, the smallest or the strangest shaped!

Make a “Guy”. A great indoor activity in the lead up to Guy Fawkes night is building Guy. Unleash  the children on some old clothes, old tights and socks to stuff with newspaper and their own artistic rendition of what they think Guy Fawkes looked like. Whether he ends up on a bonfire, or you want to give your children a mini history lesson on the events that lead up to Guy Fawkes night, is up to you but they will definitely have fun making their own “Guy”.

Holidays

If you decide that what you need at this time of the year is a bit more sunshine then there are quite a few options available to you. For those in search of almost guaranteed sunshine, Dubai has to be top of the list for holiday destinations in the October Half Term.  The weather in Dubai is very hot (generally 30-40 degrees at this time of year), dry and sunny.  The rapid expansion in the country, means that there are many modern hotels, most of which are of an excellent standard. We can highly recommend, the Royal Meridien Hotel, Jumeirah Beach, Grosvenor House and the Atlantis. Staff are both efficient and friendly,  the children love the pools, children’s club, the food and most of all they love the wonderful water parks at Wild Wadi and Atlantis.

Cyprus is another very popular country to visit at this time of year.  Again, they have very good weather, perhaps not quite as guaranteed as Dubai but a good 10/15 degrees warmer than the UK.  Hotels in Cyprus are generally of a very high standard with great service, fabulous food, especially the fish and beautiful scenery.  Most hotels have very good kids clubs.

Our recommendation is Paphos.  There is something there for everyone, beautiful sea and beaches and the mountains are very close by which make for an excellent day trip.

Obviously there are many place, but these are a couple of our favourites for the October Half Term and I hope you find the suggestions helpful to you and your family.

It seems like only 5 minutes ago that they were back at school but October is half term where parents have yet again got to find a week worth of things to do. One great idea is to take the family away for a few days to visit on the UK’s great sights. The UK has got a lot to offer all families looking for a break with some elegant cottages available for rent.

Devon, Loch Lomond and Anglesey all have an array of cottages and various types of accommodation for families to stay at where they can enjoy the sights and fresh air. Anglesey has long been a favourite of many people staying in the UK for a break as it has an eclectic of great scenery, elegant gardens and a beach. Family holidays can quickly turn into a nightmare if there are not enough activities for the young ones.

Halloween is just around the corner and you can incorporate a trip to a UK destination with some trick or treating for the kids (and big kids!). If you want to get away and relax many hotels and hostels will put on some festivities for the kids, these include holiday parks that are scattered around the UK.

Holiday parks always tend to put on an amazing show for everyone that includes parties and games for the whole family to enjoy. Haunted houses, wicked witches and ghastly ghouls can all be found so if you are one of those families that really embrace Halloween (whether by choice or necessity) then you will really enjoy your time here.

Some holidays parks may even have such events as a Halloween ball where everyone can dress up in their favourite Halloween outfits where prizes are handed out to the best costumes. A firework display usually accompanies these celebrations and is quite impressive so if you choose to go to one of the holiday parks this Halloween ensure you make the most of it and try and experience all there is to see.

Even if you are not into Halloween or want to let the kids enjoy it and you want to do something else then you can as the usual services will carry on so you can still enjoy yourself in the many restaurants and bars available. There is plenty to do for all the family and a holiday park is a great way to spend the October half term.

There are many Family Holiday resorts in the UK that have been popular for many years, resorts in Skegness and Bognor Regis

Warm autumn sunshine and lush fall colours make New York City in October an even more enticing travel destination than it already is. From the spectacular Columbus Day parade to dozens of Halloween events, there is no shortage of things to do to enjoy the beautiful fall weather!

Columbus Day Parade
Columbus Day falls on the second Monday of October, and this autumn long weekend is a popular one with travellers. New York City’s annual Columbus Day parade, a long-running tradition since 1929, takes place on Fifth Avenue and celebrates the great growth and contributions of the Italian-American community. Broadcast on six continents, the parade boasts thousands of marchers, a steady stream of colourful floats and live music and entertainment ranging from the traditional to the cutting-edge.

Oktoberfest
Columbus Day celebrates all things Italian, and Oktoberfest is a festival of all things German! From lager and leiderhosen to bratwurst and pretzels, the annual Oktoberfest celebrations in New York recreate the lively party atmosphere that Munich’s beer festival is famous for. On various Fridays and Saturdays throughout the month of October, Manhattan’s Third Avenue becomes a pedestrian-only area to accommodate the music, dancing, and wide variety of German beers and delicious Deutschland foods.

Halloween in New York City: Halloween Extravaganza and Procession of the Ghouls
There are lots of fun things to do in New York City on Halloween for kids of all ages. A favourite New York City event, particularly for those who really like to get into the spirit of the holiday, is the Halloween Extravaganza and Procession of the Ghouls. Attendees don their Halloween costumes for this annual tradition, which takes place at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The cathedral hosts an evening screening of a classic horror flick which is then followed by the Grand Procession of the Ghouls, a spooky cast of elaborately costumed characters who make their way down the cathedral aisles accompanied by eerie tunes from the church organ. Tickets sell out quickly for this event and can be purchased online.

Ghost Walks and Haunted Tours of New York City
Visitors planning to visit New York around Halloween will be in the city just at the right time to participate in a ghost walk or haunted tour. These tours can be found all year round but many more take place around the end of October. Not only does a haunted tour allow those new to the Big Apple to explore different neighbourhoods of the city, but it gets even the most serious sight-seer right into in the spooky spirit of the season! Ghosts of New York Walking Tours offers leisurely 90-minute tours in different areas of the city such as “Ghosts of Time Square”, “Edgar Allan Poe and His Ghostly Neighbors of Greenwich Village”, and “Ghost Stories for Children of All Ages.”

The crispness in the air and the warm autumn sunshine is also ideal for shopping trips up and down Madison Avenue and Fifth Avenue, home to renowned stores like Barneys New York and Bergdorf Goodman.
